Dreaming of a world without Gates
Hard-hats only
Been up since seven this morning staring at the orange gates outside my window. They popped up a few days ago and I felt like a suburbanite waking up to discover someone had planted plastic flamingos all over his lawn. Unfurled now, they flap flap flap in the breeze like some hipster’s hanging laundry circa 1999, when (if memory serves) orange was the new black. And I don’t buy the “saffron” propaganda—these things are most definitely construction-site orange, more Sunny Delight than Tropicana.
I don’t really have an opinion about these things as art. I don’t even think it would be possible for me to have an opinion: the gates are too in my face. Around here it’s all gates all the time. I’m just wondering whether I’m about to go mad. I’m a little envious of those people who come to the park to look at the gates and then go home, where they can look at something other than gates.
The gates mock me. I can hear them laffing, flippity-flap, in the breeze.

Howdy and welcome back stranger! Gotta say those things look like giant hurdles – not particularly aesthetically pleasing! Are we to expect more regular updates?ErnieMac | Feb 13, 06:25 PM | #
I read about those Gates eariler this morning. I have no idea what they are up to there. I think someone has been smoking too much or something down in City Hall…Princess | Feb 13, 10:12 PM | #

ahhh… good to see you back in the saddle.I’m torn. I’ve been a fan of Christo and the work he did covering the Reichstag was very impressive. Though, that work had a clearer political and social overtone.
This one is more of “hey look what I can do with $21 million”.
I vote to bring the cows back to NYC – you never knew when one of those was going to pop around the corner from you.

I hate to tell you, but your complaints about The Gates are what make it art. I’m not claiming to be an expert, but post-modern art is often about provoking an immediate reaction, even if that reaction is “the gates are too in my face…the gates mock me.” Congratulations, you’re part of the art!Layla | Feb 15, 09:38 AM | #

I love The Gates – and wish I could come out and see them!!I’m jealous that you get to see them all the time.
Take heart, Lex, they’re only there for 16 days. :-)

I must confess, I took a walk around the gates after a nice snowfall and I can’t believe how beautiful they were. Someone even gave me a piece of the orange cloth from the flags. It was a pleasant thing after all. It’s nice to have people talking about something other than war for a bit.runr53 | Mar 7, 08:41 PM | #
Okay, I can’t resist, Layla, Yeah but who said it? Twiddly, gotta chuckle each time I think of your handle, but as for them being there only for 16 days, thats 17 too long, Just my opinion and we all know what they say about those. Okay I’ll be lurking again now.merel | Apr 3, 06:21 PM | #
