Linking Love

First, apologies for the back-to-back meta posts. I assure you, dear reader, that we’ll return to our regular schedule of sucks and fucks soon. I’ve been preoccupied with back-end tinkering lately (in more senses than one—but that’s another story) and now seems as good a time as any to delve into administrative minutiae.

You may have noticed that I’ve adopted the traffic-ranked format (previously seen only in the gallery) for blogroll links in the front page and journal sections. Believe it or not I agonized over this decision, but with the link-trade requests piling up, sex blogs popping in and out of existence, and my blogroll turning into quite a mess, I decided this was the fairest and simplest way to sort everything out. My objectives are threefold:

  1. To reward sites that send traffic to NLP
  2. To open up my blogroll to anyone who wants to participate, much in the spirit of the Sugasm
  3. To punish commercial sites that don’t interlink and thus contribute very little to the blogging community

If you run a site with little traffic, fear not: the complete list of referring sites is available below the ‘Friends’ sidebar and I’m working on a system that rotates through sites that don’t make the front page list. Furthermore, I’m going to make an effort to link to people’s musings in the context of NLP posts (when I was starting out it always meant a lot to me when people linked to something I had to say versus only adding me to an already-crowded blogroll—fuck, it still does).

So don’t be shy: use the handy automated form and add your link instamagically.

Good to see someone else having a good old Spring clean. We’ve been thinking about doing exactly the same with our links.

I’m sad that it has placed us in the back of beyond though. :(

We all like to keep an orderly house, don’t we. ;)

Suze, just think of it as one of those toplists that everyone seems to love—you send a little traffic and get it back in spades. Place your links carefully.

I don’t know how much you’re getting in return from Jane’s Guide, for instance, but after the initial spike of traffic from my favorable review it fell off as NLP left the front page of the ‘new reviews’ section. Which is why I didn’t put up one of those banners. Why send a bunch of free hits to a $$$ site?

Perhaps I’ll make a little banner for NLP… at least people will see a decent return on the traffic they send.
